How To Have the Best Video Call

Throughout the last several years, the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath have forced many people to start using online resources for their work. IT companies and managed service providers all over the globe were suddenly bombarded with requests to assist in their client’s sudden extra technological needs when social distancing became necessary in the workplace. Computer repairs and/or updates transformed from to-do list items to urgent matters. And, as we all now know, video calls are a very important and widely utilized resource for connecting online from at home or in the office. Whether for meetings, appointments, webinars, or personal connections, video chatting has become very deeply integrated into society today, even when social distancing may not be necessary. Businesses everywhere have realized the incredible convenience of video calls, and are using them now more than ever, which makes it essential to have an efficient and comfortable set up for and around your computer in order to have the best video call.

First, make sure to evaluate how ergonomic your workstation or work environment is. Finding a comfortable chair with lower back support and a good cushion can be crucial to having the best video conference calls. No one wants to be experiencing physical discomfort when trying to focus on an online task, which is why it is good to invest in products that may make your space less intolerable or awkward. Also, make sure to have your computer monitor or laptop screen positioned straight on so that you are not turning your head or looking too far up or down, putting unneeded pressure on your neck. Researching ergonomic mouse and keyboard options is also not a bad idea to help prevent extra health issues down the line.

Take Care of You and Your Computer

Depending on how much time each day you spend sitting and/or looking at a screen, you may need to set aside time for occasional breaks in order to maintain good mental and physical health. Try looking away from your screen every 20-30 minutes and focusing your attention on something farther away for at least 30 seconds. This will allow your eyes a short break from the strain of looking at a computer screen, along with giving your mind some time to decompress before diving back in. Although electronics are very handy for our work, they are not as great for us biologically. And with the body in mind, it is also good, if possible, to get some exercise throughout the day. That could be anything from standing up from your desk a few times a day, to taking a walk around the block, to going for a run.

Now, let’s consider some better options for your computer.  Make sure to have a strong, reliable internet connection, since video chatting can take up a decent amount of bandwidth. This can be achieved by using an ethernet cable to plug your computer directly into the wall, or by taking steps to improve your wireless reception. You may need to sit closer in proximity to your Wi-fi router, or you can invest in a newer wireless system to ensure the best possible connection. If improving your wireless system isn’t an option for you, but you cannot secure a good connection, you could also try working from a device that allows a cellular connection or moving to a public building with better Wi-fi like a library or coffee house.

Look and Sound Your Best

If you are concerned about your appearance, there are several remedies available. Zoom and many other video streaming platforms offer virtual touch-up filters that can be turned on in the settings menu. These filters can help freshen up your looks if you do not feel ready to appear on camera. Also, try angling your camera slightly down for a more flattering angle of your face. Having good lighting can also improve the experience for you as well as the people on the other side of your call tremendously. Placing a simple lamp or small tabletop light behind your camera lens can work perfectly for improving the lighting of your space. Furthermore, finding a quality webcam and microphone for your computer or laptop can immensely improve the look and sound of your video, giving your watchers and listeners a much better experience. Plus, if you are concerned about the look of the space behind you, many video call services also offer virtual backgrounds that do not require a green screen. You can either set a picture that will appear behind you, or the software will blur the background of your video.

Video calls can be stressful and awkward if the proper steps are not taken to improve you and your chatmates’ experiences. It is important to have a comfortable, accessible, efficient workspace in order to increase motivation and productivity. Finding quality furniture and equipment will always help in providing the best environment for video chatting. A good, well thought out computer and internet set up is crucial to having a call with no unnecessary delays, stalls, glitches, or drops. Make the investment into improving your video chats, you won’t regret it. And, as always, having a trustworthy managed IT service partner to guide you in the world of computers and software will always help. Since video calls will not be going away anytime soon, make the effort into making your experiences even better.
