On the heels of the cyber-attack that prompted the FBI to request that everyone across the country reboot their routers to eliminate a virus / malware threat out of Russia, the US Government has banned any of their offices from using Kaspersky Labs anti-virus software. Kaspersky Labs is based in Moscow and is evidently believed to have connections to the Russian government.
Kaspersky Labs has denied any wrongdoing and insists their products will continue to protect devices where it is installed against virus and malware attacks. But many experts in the field say they feel it is prudent to make a change away from the Kaspersky Labs anti-virus product.
So, is the suggestion by the US Department of Homeland Security to move away from the Kaspersky products a geo-political move? Hard to know for sure, but large retailers such as Best Buy and Office Depot have stopped selling their product.
You’ll have to decide if you want to heed this advice and uninstall Kaspersky Labs AV, if you have it present on any of your equipment, and replace it with an alternate.
If you do decide to eliminate Kaspersky and need a product to move to, let us know. We have a managed anti-virus product that we’ve used for years that is invoiced monthly so there is no big annual expense or term period applied to it – use it as long or as little as you’d like!
