What Is VOIP?

VOIP is an acronym that stands for “Voice Over Internet Protocol.” Also called IP telephony, VOIP technology allows users to make and receive calls over the internet instead of via phone lines or cellular connections. With this technology, users can experience cheaper, more versatile calls than they could with traditional phone systems. VOIP calls can be made using smartphones, computers, tablets, VOIP phones, and other devices with internet capabilities, meaning you aren’t bound to a specific telephone device or location in order to make a call.

VOIP services can be considered as an alternative to the local phone company- all you need is high-speed internet, a VOIP service provider to manage the calls, and the necessary hardware and software. As opposed to traditional landline phones, VOIP phones are not hardwired into a physical location. Traditional telephones use wiring and cables to carry voice signals, while VOIP phones transfer data over the internet. VOIP systems work by converting your voice into a digital file, compressing it, then sending it to the receiving party via the internet using data packets. When a signal is sent, it is initially routed to your VOIP service provider, who then reroutes it to the intended recipient, where the digital file is converted back to a voice signal.

Most people are able to engage in a VOIP call through an app on their smartphone. As long as their device is connected to the internet, they can use this app to make and receive calls. This type of VOIP technology is called software based VOIP and is offered by several different applications that can be downloaded. On the contrary, hardware based VOIP systems require a special VOIP phone or adapter for a traditional landline phone. These then connect to your internet router in order to make calls over the internet.

Benefits of VOIP

There can be several benefits to choosing a VOIP phone system rather than a traditional landline phone. VOIP systems can be more affordable and easier to install. Many consumers have seen noticeable cost savings after switching to a VOIP phone system. Also, they can provide high-quality service, and offer better options for long-distance or international calls. VOIP calls have the capacity to facilitate better audio quality than traditional calls, meaning your audio will not be muffled or distorted. Additionally, with a VOIP service, you would be able to use your phone service wherever you work, whether it’s at the office or at home. Many VOIP services offer features other than voice calling as well, like group calling, video calling, call recording, customizable caller IDs, and more.

At Blue Oak, we often work with RingCentral, a company that offers VOIP services. RingCentral unites phone, SMS, online faxing, messaging, and video chatting all into one platform. This service allows for simplified communications so that you can connect with your team from anywhere in the world.

Disadvantages of VOIP

Though VOIP services have a lot of enticing features, there can be some drawbacks. Firstly, not all VOIP services support emergency service calls like dialing 911. Also, you will not be able to make or receive calls if you experience an internet outage or power outage where you cannot connect to your network. Though, some VOIP services offer a solution to this problem and allow users to forward their calls to a landline or cell phone in the case of an outage. Additionally, if you do not have sufficient internet bandwidth and connectivity, you may not experience the improved audio quality that VOIP calls can offer. Plus, with a bad internet connection, calls may be more prone to lag or drop.

VOIP services have become increasingly popular lately due to their convenient features and affordability. But, as with any form of technology, there is no ‘one size fits all’ phone service that will work for everyone. Your individual needs, as well as your internet service, will need to be considered when choosing your phone service.
