Point-to-Point
Point-to-point technology is a form of communication in which a direct path from one fixed point to another fixed point is established in order to extend the area that a network signal covers. Point-to-point links can provide a secure and efficient link between two points, creating a safe and easy route by which information can be shared and transferred. Point to point technology can be particularly useful in circumstances where a physical cable cannot be used to connect two points to the same network. This technology can offer a more convenient, cost-effective, safe method for extending a network connection for business owners. Usually, a point-to-point connection is established by placing two radios in spots with direct visibility to one another so that they can communicate.
Point-to-Multipoint
A point-to-multipoint (PMP) connection is a wireless communication approach that can be used when there is a large number of users in need of connection to one network, and especially when connectivity is needed in multiple locations that cannot be connected with a cable. In general, there is a central wireless radio that several other wireless radios can communicate with that work together to extend the network’s signal. This one-to-many connection provides a signal from a single location to several other locations. PMP is usually used in locations like campuses, where multiple locations need access to the same network. This method of wireless communication provides a cost-effective solution for situations where running a cable between locations would be very expensive, very difficult, or impossible. These systems are flexible and convenient- the only possible obstacle is that each connecting radio must have direct visibility to the central base radio, meaning that nothing can sit in the straight line between radios. Trees or hills might obstruct the connection between radios, so proper placement and alignment is crucial.
Blue Oak recently completed a project, for example, where PMP was needed to provide internet connections throughout a lumber yard. This particular lumber yard consisted of a large, paved area with several disconnected buildings. Each building was in need of connection to their network, but since the area was paved, it would’ve been impossible to run cables between buildings, making PMP the perfect solution for them to gain connectivity throughout the premises. Now, inventory tasks, checking orders and status, pricing, and other tasks that require connection to their network have been made available and more efficient throughout their location using PMP technology. They currently have a central radio that connects to several other radios on their buildings, extending their network signal throughout their campus. For this recent project, Blue Oak used technology offered by Cambium Networks, a wireless solutions company committed to accessible wireless technologies. Ask us about how we can help you too!
Access Points
Wireless access points are networking devices that allow devices, particularly wireless mobile devices, to connect to your network. An access point is used to create the wireless local area network (WLAN), making it fit for large offices or buildings. Stand-alone wireless access points have more capabilities than wireless routers, including allowing for more connections at a time, a broader transmission range, and a stronger ability to send and receive signals. These devices can be used to extend the coverage area of your network and can provide a clear connection to your network from anywhere within your building. Access points can be used in more public places like restaurants, events, airports, etc. These can also be used to segment out a guest network to allow outside devices to connect to your business network in a safe way, as long as a business grade router with virtual local area network (VLAN) capabilities is in place.
